Version 3.1
Version 3.1 has the following enhancements :
- better integration with AIX :
- software distributed in installp format
- compunixsmitty no longer exists, menus are now integrated with standard AIX
- documentation distributed in HTML format
- major improvements for the defragmentation utility :
- support added for incremental defragmentation.
- improvement of defragmentation algoritm. Benchmarks demonstrates a further 20% performance improvement compared with version 2.2.
- performance improvements of 50% have now been measured
- as a technology demonstration, online defragmentation is included. It is no longer needed to have the filesystem unmounted. This new functionality is only a demonstration since the benchmark results are not as good as the offline defragmentation. This issue will be further addressed in the next release.
- online defragmentation is only supported on AIX 4.2 and AIX 4.3
- improvements for the reduce utility :
- integration with rlvm, reduce logical volume manager : when v4fsreduce has been executed succesfully, rlvm can be called to reduce the logical volume at the same time.
- reduce operation now includes online support. Reducing the size of a filesystem consist of two major operations : moving data blocks and moving inodes. Moving the data blocks can now be performed online. As such reducing the time that the filesystem is unavailable while unmounted.
- analyse utility (undelete of files) :
- provide shell type of interface to surf the filesystem and list all files that can be recovered
- emulate numerous of commands in this mode :
- vi
- cp
- file
- od
- recover with a single command multiple files
- recovery of all free space : when you find nothing interesting that can be recovered directly, this option will copy all non-allocated space for closer investigation
- protection of overwriting valuable data
